I haven't written anything about the downturn in President Reagan's condition. The reason is this: I'm not sure what to say. One of the greatest Americans in history has suffered a long and unfitting end to a brilliant life. We all knew that this time would come. But somewhere, deep down, I've always felt more comfortable about the light of American freedom knowing the Gipper was still with us.

He is still with us, in some sense. But the twilight is upon us. As he wrote in 1994, announcing his diagnosis of Alzheimers

I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.

I guess that's the answer I need.
