Per an eyewitness account from TeamGOP.org, quoted in full

In case you have not heard, Speaker verbally assaulted the Micky Cannon, wife of Dr. Jesse Cannon, at the Haywood County NAACP Annual Freedom Fund & Awards Banquet last Saturday night.

Before the event, Speqaker Naifeh arrived with Lois Deberry and Civil rights pioneer Dr. Benjamin Hooks. Speaker Naifeh walked up to Ms. Cannon and demanded that she “STOP LYING ABOUT ME. STOP LYING ABOUT MY RECORD.” Ms. Cannon ask him to stop speaking to her in that way…Naifeh kept on. Ms. Cannon told several people she was afraid she was going to be hit by Naifeh.

Evidently, Speaker Naifeh was not pleased that she had been informing the voters in the district how Speaker Naifeh voted on things from gay right and abortion. Jessica Cannon, 22year old daughter of the Cannons, stood (as Lois Deberry backed away from the group) and yelled back at Speaker Naifeh to stop acting like a 10 year old and that he needed to grow up.

One of the Cannon sons, Dr. Jason Cannon, walked quickly over to the group trying to diffuse the anger. Dr. Jason Cannon introduced himself and the Speaker’s angry reply was, “I know who you are!” Dr. Jason Cannon, then using a less cordial voice, asked the Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives to stop yelling at his mother. Naifeh angrily replied, “I CAN DO ANYTHING I WANT.”

By that time most of the immediate crowd around was stunned into silence and Dr. Jason Cannon told Speaker Naifeh that he could not speak to his mother that way at which point…for some reason…the good Speaker decided to retreat to his table.

As he left, Micky Cannon told Naifeh that there was no way that a black woman was going to be yelled at like a dog at an NAACP event. Ms. Cannon then proceeded to tell every table and every person about the disrespectful treatment by Speaker Naifeh.

During the event, Speaker Naifeh was not allowed to speak…he was no even recognized.
